Diversity in Design

Date: March 2020
Tools: Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop
Role: 30 Days of Illustration

Diversity in design has been an important topic in today’s design industry although many may not be aware of it. According to the Design Census 2019 data created by Google and AIGA, designers from each minority group are less than 10% and some may have little or no representation in the industry. Having more diverse people in the design industry does not merely mean that we have people from various ethnicities and show more unique work environments. It brings diverse thoughts, experiences, perspectives, and design. Being exposed to diverse stories are very essential to “good” design because good design does not target just one audience. It impacts diverse audiences, a community and eventually society. To highlight the value of diversity and inclusion in design industry, I set myself a 30-day illustration challenge by creating 20 illustrations for 20 days and a final poster for the rest of the days.

DESIGN PROCESS

Embracing diversity comes from facing uncertainty and being open to new things, so I intentionally named each person with names that people may not be familiar with and could feel uncertain.

From this 30-days of illustration, I was able to build my skills in illustration and drawing and come up with unique styles of each illustration. It was fun to explore many different unique names from the random name generator!
